The Kaliko Katze is not a specific breed, but simply the name of a specific coat color. Any cat that is white and has black and orange spots on its fur is called a calico cat. The white part usually takes up 25 to 80% of the body, while the rest is filled with colored spots.

Like humans, female cats have two X chromosomes (XX) and male cats have one X and one Y chromosome (XY). It is the X chromosome that determines what color your cat is.

Although many colors can be combined, black and orange can never be combined within the same X chromosome. Since male cats typically only have 1 X chromosome, they can never have both black and orange fur.

However, female cats can be both orange and black, as they can carry orange on one X chromosome and black on the other. Calico cats should therefore always be female. However, there is an exception.

Some male cats have one Y chromosome and two X chromosomes (XXY), which is very rare and is called Klinefelter syndrome. These rare tomcats can have calico colors but unfortunately are almost always sterile.
